Northern Ireland Genealogy & History
Since Ireland is such a large country, it is a good idea to take a close up look at certain parts of it. Northern Ireland has been considered its own little entity since 1920 under the guidelines of the Ireland Act. Even though it was still a part of the United Kingdom, it was able to operate under its own ruling. It was complete with its own Prime Minister and Parliament.
Since this was the case, Northern Ireland was able to avoid the majority of what took place with the Civil War there. While there were a few attacks on the area by enemy forces as well as Vikings, they were left alone for the most part. The government as they knew it though shifted in 1972.
During this time, there were tensions growing among two different religious groups. The Protestants and the Catholics were both forces attempting to have control in Northern Ireland. Each spent a great deal of time trying to convert others to their own religious beliefs. They would spend a great deal of time displaying reasons why the other religion wasn’t one with believing in. They would also treat those of the other faith very poorly to show their disdain for their choices.
However, the hostilities continued for decades after that. Even as late as 2007 there were concerns among the people of Northern Ireland. The quest to offer a shared power for the people is one that is good in theory but often very difficult to impose. Britain has removed their military support so it is up to the police in Northern Ireland now to ensure the rules and policies continue to be followed like they should.
Even with the freedom of Ireland in 1922, Northern Ireland continues to be separate from that. The conflicts that occur can still be seen based on the writings found as well as the flags that are flown in various parts of it. There is a great deal of tension among people, business, and politics in Northern Ireland that continues today because of such issues.
