In the late 18th Century, New Zealand was an isolated place where not too many people lived. It took more than 100 days to reach there by way of the open waters. Many traders moved from Ireland to New Zealand in an effort to trap the various animals they could sell the furs of. They also captured seals so they could sell their oils.

It is believed that approximately 15% of the people in New Zealand came from an Irish heritage. One of the most memorable was John Fitzgerald as he helped the lands to become civilized and to organize structure there. He was able to encourage other Irish families to come settle in New Zealand.

What was once isolated territory where very few ventured became a place for the Irish to make a new start. They are honored with helping to allow the area of New Zealand to become a prosperous location with plenty to offer. Many of the traditions from these early Irish families still remain in place around New Zealand today.

According to the documentation of immigrants from Ireland to New Zealand, very few of them returned. There was always the opportunity and ships sailed to and from the area. Yet most found their lives to be very good in this new area and they settled down to raise their families there.
